Dentures

What are dentures?
Dentures are dental appliances that replace missing teeth. They restore confidence in one's appearance and help the wearer to speak and eat normally. They are not permanently affixed to the bone or existing teeth, unlike dental implants and dental bridges, so dentures can be removed at night for cleaning. They work best if the supporting tissue is of ideal shape. Their cost varies depending on the plastic and metal materials used.
The two main types of dentures are called full and partial.
What are full dentures?
Full dentures are for those patients who have lost all of their natural teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. The kinds types of full dentures are:
Conventional Dentures
Conventional dentures are the most affordable option. They are made a few weeks after the natural teeth are removed and the bones and gums have healed. While the waiting period can be frustrating, conventional dentures normally fit properly the first time, since the new shape of the mouth and gums has been established.
Immediate Dentures
Immediate dentures are placed as soon as the natural teeth are removed. With immediate dentures, the patient need not face the world without teeth, can eat normally much sooner than with conventional dentures, and does not have speech problems while waiting for conventional dentures. However, since healing of the gums and jaw will change the fit of immediate dentures, the patient will typically need some adjustments at a later date.
What are partial dentures?
Partial dentures are an affordable option for those who have lost some teeth but do not want dental implants or bridges. Partial dentures are held in place by the natural teeth and gums.
